Chef Daniel Le’s Essex Pearl is a hidden gem that transports diners to Southeast Asia via a Lower East Side basement, with such vibrant spicy dishes as Indonesian Fried Chicken, Cambodian Grilled Pork Jowl, and seafood creations like Crispy Whole Fish with Tamarind Chili Sauce and Crispy Baby Octopus, inspired by Thai and Vietnamese street food vendors. Chef Le partnered with Steven Wong—the second-generation fishmonger behind Aqua Best, which provides fish and seafood to some of New York City’s top restaurants, including Le Bernardin and Masa.
