New eats near NYU: A homey noodle shop in a sleek, modern space

Rulin’s reimagined Chinese cuisine culminates in hand-pulled noodle dishes that feel down-to-earth.

Rulin, a new hand-pulled noodle shop on East 13th Street near NYU, offers a modern yet homey dining experience founded by Lane Li and her husband Chris Wang. Drawing on Li's background from her Brooklyn restaurant, Noodle Lane, the establishment focuses on the craft of fresh dough-pulling to create signature dishes like the $28 Sichuan noodle soup and $26 dry Dan Dan noodles. While the price point is higher than nearby competitors, the restaurant justifies the cost through labor-intensive preparations, such as broths simmered for days, and a menu that includes more affordable options like $5 cumin chicken skewers. Ultimately, Rulin seeks to provide a comforting "taste of home" for students and neighborhood residents through a minimalist, upscale atmosphere that remains grounded in traditional Chinese flavors.
